Frank H. Heck Memorial Fund
Dr. Frank Hopkins Heck came to Centre College in 1948 and remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1974. He was chair of the history department until 1967 and served as Dean of the College from 1955 to 1965.
Born in Racine, Wisconsin, on October 18, 1904, Heck received a B.A. Degree from Lawrence College and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. Degree from the University of Minnesota. Before coming to Centre, he taught at Nebraska State Teachers College (Kearney State College) and Miami University of Ohio. Heck was honoured by Centre for his distinguished career in the academic field and by the Episcopal Church in Kentucky for his services to the Church. Centre presented him with an honorary degree in 1982, and the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Lexington presented him with the Bishop's Silver Medal in 1979. He was the founding member of Centre's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Heck died March 30, 1983, after a short illness.
The fund was created in 1983 with the note that the primary purpose is purchasing books for the library and the college archives, which are "a matter very close to the heart" of Dr. Heck. "Priority will be given to works illuminating the historical background of the disciplines involved."
