MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
May is a time to raise awareness of
those living with mental or behavioral
health issues and to help reduce the
stigma so many experience. According
to the US Department of Health &
Human Services – suicide remains the
second leading cause of death among
youth aged 10 to 14 and adults aged
24 to 35. While suicide was
responsible for nearly 46,000 deaths
in 2020, many more people attempt or
have serious thoughts of suicide –

Scholars Program

2022-2023
The J.H. & Artie Atkins Scholars Program is a remarkable opportunity for individuals who are
passionate about promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By engaging in
intellectual inquiry and practical action, an Atkins Scholar can contribute to creating
a more just world.
These six scholars have conducted research on topics such as access to eating disorder
treatment, student health and wellness at Centre College, the impact of military conflict on
women's health, the connection between Buddhism and queerness, decolonial feminisms in the
Spanish-speaking world, and photographic analysis of BIPOC Identity.
My research examined how aspects of gender
and sexuality, particularly with regards to
LGBTQ+ identity, impacted students who
sought out help for eating problems at the
college and university level. The broader goal
of this work was to examine barriers to care,
increase community awareness surrounding
eating problems, and ensure resource
accessibility was both equitable and inclusive.

LGBTQ+ Identity, and Resource Utilization for

My project problematized and challenged the
hegemonic and heteronormative feminist discourses
dominating our world, by centering
and studying the anti-racist, anti-capitalist, anticolonial/imperial perspectives of Afro/Indigenous
women in different parts of the Spanish-speaking
world. I focused on decolonial feminisms detached
from Westernized forms and practices, that
centered the voices, experiences, and
contributions of subordinated women from Spanishspeaking territories. Through this project, I studied
the original works of scholar-activists located in
different regional/local Spanish-speaking
contexts, like Maria Lugones, Ochy Curiel, Yuderkys
Espinosa-Miñoso, and Aura Cumes to name a few.
Additionally, as part of this project, I organized a
convocation for March 7th, 2023, featuring Queer
Feminist Cuban Hip-Hop band, Krudxs Cubensi.
Through their convocation and visit, I sought to
address the intellectual genocide committed
against Afro- and Indigenous scholar-activists in
the so-called Global South as their work
continuously went uncited, untranslated, and
unrecognized within the larger feminist discourse
in the so-called Global North.

After conducting a series of interviews, I have
identified several key support systems for
international students at Centre. Notably, faculty,
the international student body, and the family
friendship program, organised by our incredible
Jessica Leonard, stand out as the most prominent
sources of support. However, my research has
also highlighted some areas where the existing
support systems fall short of meeting student
needs. For instance, international students have
expressed the need for more tax advising
resources and designated spaces on campus for
intercultural learning. Additionally, many students
would like to see improved communication
channels between international students and the
administration, as well as specialized career
support, such as international alumni panels.

"Is Buddhism inherently
opposed to queerness?
Growing up in a Buddhist family and surrounded by
Buddhist communities, the religion has always been
part of who I am. From celebrating holidays such as
Tet, going to temples and pagodas resembles the
upkeep of spirituality guiding pacifist and harmonyfocused lifestyle. As I am 8,000 miles away from home,
temples play an important role in providing me a sense
of belonging and a new-found welcoming community.
Through my extensive past experience researching
about the intersectionality of religions such as Islam or
Judaism and queerness, I developed an interest in
understanding how Buddhist communities in the US
verses Asian countries such as Vietnam or Thailand view
LGBTQ+ identities, especially in relation to how cultural
norms contribute to such difference. I conducted
interviews with 16 religious leaders, monks, and artists in
these areas and traveled to Los Angeles, Vietnam,
Louisville, and Kansas in order to first-hand interact with
local communities. My Atkins Project has taught me
how important community is in relations to the self and
to the faith, deriving from how Buddhism arrived in the
US with a cultural and language transmission,
practicing compassion within activism, and alleviation
of suffering in a highly-conflicted world.
My project explored healthcare accessibility to
women before, during, and post-war, using South
Caucasus as a case study. I researched the
Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020 (Azerbaijan
attacking Armenia), and the South Ossetia war in
2008 (Russia attacking Georgia). I presented on my
three main findings of my project, primarily focusing
on deprioritization of women by the government and
the society during war, the gap between healthcare
policy and implementation, and finishing the
presentation making connections to the pro-choice
and anti-abortion political debate in the United
States.

give and receive empathy, including giving ourselves
empathy, to recognize our emotions, and to be able to
clearly and concisely make asks that will make our lives
more wonderful. The first step is empathy. We need to
be able to receive empathy from others when we are
most vulnerable to help with healing. Part of receiving
empathy is being able to give it to ourselves.

"Weight of Words"
The “Weight of Words” workshop was
held on April 17th at Centre Works and
nearly 40 staff participated in small group
conversations facilitated by Centre parent,
Kalinda Fisher with The Great Reset. The
goal of the workshop was to engage in
conversations and de-code challenging words
and topics. The Office of Diversity and
Inclusion has partnered with The Great
Reset and over the summer, six staff will
receive facilitator training. This Fall, staff
will arrange various small group discussions
and invite faculty, staff, and students to
the table to “discover community through
conversation”.

From the Desk of Dr. Abrams,
Last Wednesday, a caravan of students, staff, and faculty traveled to Frankfort to protest Kentucky
k Senate Bill 150, an assault on the
ky
human rights of those in the transgender, non-binary, and queer communities. As folks gathered behind the Norton Center, despite the
cold and the heaviness of the moment, I witnessed smiles, hugs, and love in the crowd. In addition to protest signs and bottled water,
those headed to Frankfort also carried some trepidation about what may
a happen and steely determination concerning what must happen.
ay
As a society, we must resist any rhetoric or behavior that would deny the right to autonomy over one’s body, freedom to express identity,
ease in forming a community, and access to education on gender and sexuality.
There are those in the Centre community who disagree with what the protesters are fighting for. The diversity of culture, family, religion,
politics, and personal belief means there are varying perspectives concerning gender and sexuality. But, surely, we all agree in our
common humanity and that each among us are deserving of dignity, safety, and respect.
I urge everyone to remember our shared humanity, our common right to expect dignity and safety in our daily lives, and our commitment
to be a community who cares for one another despite our differences. This is the moment to choose kindness, this is the time to act.
Reach out with your support. Hold accountable those who do harm.
Centre has made strives in the past few years but there is more work to do. The next page contains resources shared by Dr. Rick Axtell
and the Human Rights Campaign.
Yours in Solidarity,
Andrea Abrams, PhD

All Access EKY (AAEKY) is a collaboration between Appalshop and Power to Decide that works in eastern
Kentucky to build support for policies, programs, and services that ensure all eastern Kentuckians have
access to the full range of contraceptive methods. In this convocation, All Access EKY will describe the
current landscape of contraceptive access in Kentucky. Facilitators and participants will identify barriers to
and policy solutions for protecting and increasing access. Facilitators will share examples of how young
people across the country are increasing access on their college campuses and in their communities.
Attendees will learn how they can be successful advocates for contraceptive access and develop an advocacy
action plan that they can use to improve Reproductive Well-being in their own communities.
